o2000-06-15 - On this day - Arnold makin' moneyo

Saturday, June 15, 1996

Arnold got $25 million plus a cut of the box-office gross and merchandising gross for his role in Batman and Robin. As Mr Freeze Arnold got top billing above George Clooney - and his first chance to be evil since the days of The Terminator. Other studio besses feared Arnold's record pay cheque will start a flurry of multimillion dollar pay demands. Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Jim Carry and Sylvester Stallone were on $20 million a movie, but all were expected to demand more when their next deal is negotiated to keep abreast of Schwarzenegger.

The Inner-City Games Foundation's lucky stars were shining brightly over Houston's Planet Hollywood location. The restaurant's most famous shareholder dropped by, but wasn't there for the great food. Arnold, the national chairman for the Inner-City Games Foundation, was beaming as he accepted a huge $2.000.000 check from the Cendant Corporation. The donation is the biggest in the Inner-City Games' history. Sources haven't heard what the money is to be used for, but they knew Arnold will see it's put to good use.

Arnold and a young fan instantly hit it off during a visit to the San Antonio Planet Hollywood in 1998

The Houston visit was the second stop of a Texas two-step. Arnold first dropped in at the San Antonio Planet Hollywood to great and thank other sponsors of the Inner-City Games Foundation. He presented each honoree with a plaque for his generosity. The crowd was then treated to karate and gymnastic performances by participants of the games. The most popular part of the visit came next when Arnold signed autographs for his fans outside the restaurant.

o2000-06-13 - On this day - LAH World Premiereo

Sunday, June 13, 1993

World premiere of Last Action Hero with 2.300 invited guests. Genereal opinion was that Last Action Hero won't work.

A Last Action Hero premiere party bash was later that day in Westwood. Rack of lamb, pizzas, shrimp, pastas, steak tacos and wild mushroom quesadillas. Yum. And, er, rice puddling for "afters". Looming over the crowd (including Schwarzenegger, Columbia Pictures chief Mark Canton, Sony Pictures chief Peter Guber, Arnold's wife Maria Shriver, Anthony Quinn, Rosanna Arquette, Richard Dreyfuss, Charles Dance, fireworks, non-entities) was a 40-foot blow-up replica of Arnie himself.

James Cameron was speaking with the press in Ottawa, Canada, and revealed that even though he has been attached to a variety of films, he is closest to committing to a sequel to True Lies. Although he again expressed an interest in doing a feature version of Spider-Man, he conceded that the continuing legal woes surrounding the property may make the movie a difficult proposition. "We don't control the rights to Spider-Man," Cameron said at the conference. "We've been actively pursuing them for eight or nine years now and they just always seem to be out of reach. The legal entanglements seem to get worse as time goes on. There are so many parties that have attached themselves to the project over the years." Cameron has said that he will next write and possibly produce a remake of Planet of the Apes, but his next directing gig looks more and more likely to be True Lies 2. "A second True Lies is something we're actively discussing right now," Cameron said, confirming a report by the Insider that appeared here months ago. "Of all the films I've done, I enjoy the [True Lies] characters the most and I think it's the most open ended in terms of playing around with those relationships." Cameron met with True Lies stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Arnold in Mexico during his shoot on Titanic two years ago to discuss the project and has said that more progress has been made on a secret agent sequel than any of the other movies he's considering (including the now-in-development Terminator 3).

World Premiere of Batman and Robin in LA. On the poster Arnold as Mr. Freeze got a top billing above the hero and major lead Batman portrayed by George Clooney. Many speculated that Batman and Robin is actually Arnold's film and should there deserve a different title - Mr. Freeze?! Critics agreed that Arnold is the centerpiece of Batman and Robin.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver welcomed designer Giorgio Armani, who hosted a celeb-laden fete at West Hollywood's Quixote Studios for Eric Clapton. The event served as a teaser for Christie's June 24 benefit auction of 100 guitars from Clapton's personal collection. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Crossroads Centre of Antigua, the drug and alcohol rehab center founded by Clapton in 1998. Early in the evening, as they juggled cocktails and hors d'oeurves, guests toured a gallery of 40 guitars (whose asking prices ranged from $1,000 to $120,000), including Brownie, the 1956 sunburst Fender Stratocaster from which Clapton's Layla was born.

From the preview, attendees moved on to dinner; after brief remarks by Armani and Clapton, Jimmie Vaughn, and later the honoree himself, took the stage to entertain the crowd. In his first trip to Los Angeles since 1994, Armani, whose snow-white crest could be seen scurrying about the rooms, welcomed such celebs and industryites as Arnold and Maria, Jay Roach and Susanna Hoffs, Robert De Niro, Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Garry Shandling, Luke Wilson, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Glenn Close, Giovanni Ribisi, Jeff Goldblum, Sofia Coppola, Andy Garcia, Linda Fiorentino, Kelly Lynch and Mitch Glazer, Robbie Robertson, Ahmet Ertegun, former CAA music agent Tom Ross, MGM prexy Michael Nathanson, Phoenix Pictures topper Mike Medavoy and ImageMoversa Jack Rapke.
