QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"If it's hard to remember, it'll be difficult to forget."

Arnold Schwarzenegger, September 1986

o2000-06-28 - On this day - Planet Movieso

Wednesday, June 28, 1998

The people of Columbus, Ohio were greeted by the biggest moviestar of all time.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and a fistful of other celebrities like Shaquille O'Neal, Sylvester Stallone, and James Caan christened the new 30-screen Planet Movies complex at Easton Town Center. For $100.00 for charity anyone could attend the opening of this new $120 million dollar megaplex complete with a new Planet Hollywood on the ground floor and the movie theaters above. With a glistening gold Planet Movies pin on their tuxedo lapel or T-shirt, these "VIPs" got to walk down a red carpet into the cavernous 30-screen theater and restaurant complex. The event raised $150,000 for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Association of Greater Columbus.

Arnold loves to help his charities and he will stop at nothing to get the goal raised for that particular organization. Just before Planet Movies was to be officially opened, Arnold tore a giant 4 foot-long, fake movie ticket allowing everyone to enter. Moviegoers enter from four directions into the central, four-story rotunda, in which original movie props or replicas (a Titanic lifeboat, an alien craft from Independence Day, and a surprise Schwarzenegger prop) are suspended overhead. Arnold put Columbus' arrival on the Hollywood scene this way: "Columbus, Ohio, is another entertainment capital of the world," he shouted to the thousands.

Outside the complex, Schwarzenegger left a memento: the 48-ton Patton tank he drove in the Austrian army.
