This Wednesday, August
16th, Arnold will "be back" flexing his muscles for a cause that counts when he
visits the Hollenbeck Youth Center in Los Angeles for a tour and media walk through of the
Inner-City Games (ICG) Summer Program.
The Inner-City Games began in Los Angeles in 1991 when Arnold joined forces with Danny
Hernandez, Director of the Hollenbeck Youth Center. In 1995, with Schwarzenegger serving
as its Chairman, he and Hernandez created the Inner-City Games Foundation (ICGF) and
expanded the program into other U.S. cities. In just six years, the Inner-City Games has
spread to 14 major U.S. cities and serves over a half a million young Americans.
The Inner-City Games offers a wide variety of sports clinics and competitions, from the
traditional baseball, basketball, track, soccer and swimming, to less traditional sports
like horseback riding, tennis, golf, fencing and martial arts. Involving young people in
sports clinics and competitions teaches valuable life lessons, brings young people from
different cultures together on an equal playing field and teaches our kids about teamwork,
discipline, setting goals, working hard, respecting their bodies and winning and losing.
Inner-City Games Chairman, Arnold Schwarznegger, calls sports the "hook" to get
kids involved so that they can then be directed into education, art, cultural and other
programs, to achieve a "strong body" and a "strong mind".
In recent years, ICG has expanded its educational efforts by focusing on the Digital
Divide and education technology. Thanks to ICG National Sponsors Knowledge Adventure and
Cendant Corporation, ICG is providing computer technology services to inner-city kids in
80 sites throughout the country.
Joining Arnold for the walk through this Wednesday will be several V.I.P.'s, including Los
Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, Altanta Mayor Bill Campbell, Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown,
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, Detroit Mayor Dennis W.
Archer, Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street and most importantly, the Children of the
Hollenbeck Youth Center.
