Arnold's heart op, Part II

Arnold was up and walking the day after heart op, making what his team of three heart surgeons described as an "absolutely remarkable recovery." Arnold forced himself to get out of bed and made his way to the Lifecycle in the rehab area. He rode the bike for 20 minutes. What he didn't realize was that his new heart valve (only 60 percent "take" correctly after this type of surgery) was leaking. Arnold collapsed and was rushed once more to the operating table, where he was again opened up.

Reportedly the pain was severe and Arnold, half dazed by everything, asked, "Why aren't you giving me an anesthetic?" The doctor replied: "We can't - your lungs are full of blood. You would die." A further human valve was inserted, and Arnold was again stitched up.

Arnold had a heart surgery: Doctors replaced an aortic valve with a valve from another human heart to correct a congenital heart condition. The five hour operation took place at University of Southern California University Hospital in L.A..

Arnold has known for years that, like his father before him, he had an inherited condition that, in his own best interest, he would need to have taken care of sooner or later. Arnold's heart was actually removed from his body - a valve from a human cadaver was inserted, and Arnold was stitched up.

Arnold's publicist, Catherine Olim, said the surgery was elective: "This is a congenital condition that's existed in his family." She added that Arnold is expected to make a full recovery and will not be required to take medication after the surgery.

Arnold attended 50th anniversary of the State of Israel. CBS Television Network aired a national television program called "To Life! America Celebrates Israel's 50th" with Arnold participating.

The televised tribute to Israel's 50th anniversary ran smoothly. Arnold introduced violinist Gil Shaham. (Arnold played violin in Stay Hungry)

The program was fueled with star power, and credits included hosts Kevin Costner and Michael Douglas. Arnold appeared with Winona Ryder, Stevie Wonder and Richard Dreyfuss during the two-hour special. The producers of the show have names which carry some weight also. Don Mischer and David Goldberg have produced tremendous extravaganzas in the past, including the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympic and the ceremonies marking Honk Kong's return to China from Britain. Organizers hope profits from this project will reach over $400.000.

A very interesting article was published that day:

Hoping to ride once again on the coattails of Arnold, Mario Kassar and his old business partner Andrew Vajna had bought out the other half of the rights from Terminator and T2 producer Gale Anne Hurd. Vajna muscled the first half of T3's rights away from 20th Century Fox a few months before that. That positioning caused James Cameron, who has become ever so loyal to 20th Century Fox, to publically announce that he has ended his participation with the Terminator series. Even without Cameron's involvement, Mario is determined to lure the Austrian to star in T3. Word was that, according to Arnold Schwarzenegger's publicist, Mario Kassar has tried repeatedly to contact Arnold for the past two weeks, with no avail, a useless attempt to attract Arnold's interest in the new Terminator film. Sources close to Arnold insisted that Schwarzenegger had (has) no plans discussing any movie deals with Kassar. "When it comes to Arnold and Crusade, the wounds are still fresh... They won't heal." admitted a close personal friend of the muscled one. "Arnold was left very disgusted the last time he did business with Kassar. It's a case of once bitten, twice shy." Even if Mario Kassar appologized for the death of Crusade, the chances of the two Hollywood figures reconciliating are slight. "Arnold remains very loyal to Jim Cameron. Once Gale Anne Hurd (Cameron's ex-wife and very good friend), was forced to give up her half of the rights to the cyborg films, Jim took it personal. That means his wife Linda Hamilton took it personal, that means Arnold took it personal, and that means no T3...for any of them."

Art Zeller was also invited to the premiere. There was a large number of press photogs on hand. At one point when Artie was pushed aside by officials, Arnold said: "This man is always allowed access to press facilities. His name is Art Zeller and he was my first photographer when I came to the States ... Without him I wouldn't be here today..." After this introduction everyone started taking Art Zeller's picture ... click, click. The screening of the movie took place at a New York City.
